Most of the posts above are outright trash! Before you go off spewing your acidic comments, check your facts. I've known Rev. Robert H. Schuller (the elder) since the early 1970s. He is devout in his beliefs, passionate about his mission, and very careful to protect his honesty and integrity. He and Billy Graham are the only two (that I'm aware of) world figures in tele-evangelism that have been extremely careful to keep their noses clean and stick firmly to their beliefs. He does not lead an extravagant life style, he and his family live in an upper middle-class community. Neither he nor the church owns a private aircraft. He has always flown on commercial flights. While he does have the benefit of a chauffeur driven automobile, it is not one of the behemoth stretch limousines. Nor did he ask for this benefit. As a matter of fact, he vehemently opposed it. However, the church council insisted that he should use it due to his extremely busy schedule. He doesn't just sit back and assume the imperious posture while in the vehicle. He works while en-route to other meetings, functions, etc! Just as many other executives do in the secular world.
He and his wife raised their children to believe in God, respect country, community, neighbors, family and themselves. They maintained the family unit while most Americans have lost it because they are too busy acquiring things. While he may be a bit theatrical in his sermons, he is anything but in his beliefs and private life. He teaches positive thinking, self respect, compassion toward others, and charity toward all. His televised church services have reached people around the world and helped countless thousands.
He was deeply criticized for building the Crystal Cathedral, people saying how much the money could have helped those in need. He pointed out, and rightly so, that the construction of the building actually put thousands of people to work, earning a descent salary that allowed them to put food on their tables and a roof over their heads. The ministry employs a very large staff which, again, puts food on tables and roof over their heads. It also gives them, and people around the world, a positive faith and value system that is about personal worth, love, compassion and charity toward others. I would much rather see this than the garbage most of you are spewing.
What is your life about? What do you do toward giving back to others? What are your values? What do you do that gives you a warm glow inside? Most of you appear to think only of yourself. Money has become your God and Meism (Me-ism) your religion. "It's all about me!" Me, me, me, mine, mine, mine. You will never be truly happy because you base your self worth (value) on "things."
Trust me when I say that in the end the only thing that will truly matter is how much you have loved. Not the love of things, but the love of others and yourself (in a healthy way).
If Reverend Schueller (the elder) has done anything wrong, I believe it was in placing too much of a desire in having his son follow in his footsteps. This is a human factor, not that of a religious zealot. It's the same thing as some fathers wanting their sons to grow to be a super star in football, baseball, basketball, musical compositions, or whatever. Regardless, it is sad to see what is happening.
